Countryside Stewardship visits

Educational visits to the estate are  available free of charge through the DEFRA Countryside Stewardship Scheme. These are self led visits and a pre-visit by the teachers is essential,

Visits are free but you will need to organise your own transport. 

What you can do on the estate:
The day begins with a welcome and an introduction to the estate with some background information on the farmAll activities must be pre-arranged and are self led.  Younger students may prefer to follow the Nature Trail with afternoon pond dipping whereas older students may carry out ecological studies of the area.  Adult groups can have a guided tour on the history of the Estate and its management, whereas general interest groups such Cub Scout and Watch groups may prefer to come for an evening and follow the trails.

Ecological investigations

A trail around the estate with a range of activities- including minibeasts
Use compass bearings to navigate around the parkland discovering about wildlife 
Find the rune using picture clues and decipher the name of an animal.

Pond species and their adaptations


Something prickly, 10 different leaves, etc...

Baffling Bog, Ball Maze, Tyre Puzzle, Team Skis, Spider’s Web


Investigating growth rate on different aspects of a hedge.
Investigating leaf sizes of trees in light and shade.

Investigating species diversity on improved and unimproved pasture.
Invertebrate interactions with tree species (eg Holly leaf Miner, Beech Weevil, Oak gall wasps, Beech gall midge)

Facilities:

  • Picnic area: in front of the main house, next to the car park, if wet the main house can be used 

  • A range of fieldwork equipment is available 

  • Toilets at the rear of the main building 

  • Hand-washing facilities in the toilet and in the main house 

  • Access for those with disabilities: The main house has wheelchair access and the drive is useable by wheelchairs. 

  • Meeting point if children get lost: in front of the main house 

  • Place to go to if there is an emergency: the Main house

     

    Cancellation arrangements
    If you are unable to carry out your visit, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can make alternative arrangements.

    On arrival
    Coaches and minibuses can be parked in front of the main house.
    Bags and shoes can be left in the main hall during their visit. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch which can be eaten outside on the main lawn if fine, or inside the main house if wet.
